Examination of the body following assault traditionally relies heavily on visual examination. However, many injuries, such as bruises or bite marks, can be faint or hidden, with crucial details going undetected when examined under standard lighting.
When blunt force trauma occurs, blood vessels in the mid-layer of the the skin rupture, with blood leaking into the surrounding tissues. Following the initial injury, haemoglobin in this blood breaks down, causing the bruise to change colour. Over the course of roughly two weeks a bruise will go from red to purple/black/blue, then green/yellow, and finally yellowish brown.
Bruises of different colours will fluoresce more brightly under different illumination wavelengths, revealing differing levels of detail. This makes multispectral forensic light sources ideal for improving their visibility, while putting the victim first by ensuring examinations remain contactless and non-invasive.
The Crime-lite AUTO Polarising Kit eliminates surface reflection and glare from the surface of the skin, further enhancing our ability to visualise bruising, particularly on older bruises which may otherwise be difficult to observe.
